Skillful places data engineers, software engineers and technology specialists across banks, lenders, fintechs and insurance businesses in the UK. Pipelines, warehouses, backend services and cloud platforms, permanent and contract, individual hires and small squads.
The data and technology engineering market in financial services has changed significantly over the past five years. Cloud migration, the shift to modern data stacks and the demand for near-real-time data have created a generation of roles that sit somewhere between traditional software engineering and data platform work. We recruit across this range, data engineers, platform engineers, backend developers and analytics engineers, at firms that take their data infrastructure seriously.
We work on both permanent and contract placements, from mid-level engineers through to engineering managers and heads of data platform.
Data engineers at financial services firms typically work on ingestion pipelines, transformation layers and the platform architecture that supports analytics and science teams. We place data engineers working with Python, Spark, dbt, Airflow and Kafka, building on cloud platforms, primarily AWS, Azure and GCP. Domain experience in credit, payments or insurance is valued but not always essential.
Analytics engineering has emerged as a distinct discipline, sitting between data engineering and analytics, focused on building well-modelled, well-documented data assets in tools like dbt on top of cloud warehouses. We place analytics engineers at fintechs and data-forward lenders who are building out their modern data stack and need people who understand both the technical and the analytical side.
Many of the firms we work with also have backend engineering needs that are adjacent to their data work, API development, microservices, event-driven architecture and the backend services that sit around their data platforms. We place Python and Java engineers, and increasingly Scala engineers working in Spark-heavy environments, at banks, fintechs and specialist lenders.
Cloud engineering is a growing need at financial services firms in the midst of migration programmes or building greenfield platforms. We place cloud data engineers and platform engineers working on AWS (Redshift, Glue, Kinesis), Azure (Synapse, Data Factory, Event Hubs) and Snowflake, often in combination with Terraform and modern DevOps tooling.
The most common technical profiles we fill involve Python, SQL, Spark, dbt, Airflow, Kafka and Snowflake. We also recruit for Java, Scala and cloud platform skills, AWS, Azure and GCP, depending on the client's stack. Many roles at this level sit near the boundary between data and software engineering, so we look for people who are comfortable working across that line.
Our clients include retail banks, challenger banks, specialist lenders, payment fintechs and insurance businesses. Some are rebuilding legacy data infrastructure; others are scaling a modern stack that already exists. Contract work is a significant proportion of what we do in technology engineering, fixed-term project resource, platform build support and hands-on technical delivery during migration programmes.
We place both, and technology engineering is one of the disciplines where contract hiring is most common. Day-rate contracts are typical for platform work, cloud migration and data warehouse builds where firms need experienced hands for a defined period rather than permanent headcount. We maintain a network of contractors across the stack and can move quickly when a client has an urgent requirement.
